“The simplest acts of kindness are by far more powerful then a thousand heads bowing in prayer.”
The Chams Kitchen - A Yearly Initiative
Food brings people together. We decided to make the best of that notion through establishing a mobile soup kitchen which only runs during the holy month of Ramadan. We have organized two Kitchens so far, the first in 2017 in Shatila refugee camp in Beirut, and. the second (2018) in Majdal Anjar area in the Beqaa Valley. We reached 3000 people, Syrian and Palestinian refugees, as well as vulnerable Lebanese families. We use the kitchen as a tool for reconciliation between conflicting tribes and/or communities, decrease tension between the refugee & host community & spread positive messages such as collaboration & trust.
Salam Ramadan Kitchen 2018
Salam means peace & Ramadan is Peace.
An Eco-friendly Month
Every year, many similar Soup Kitchens end up wasting a lot of food, disposing of absurd amounts of plastic and unfortunately, animal abuse increases and goes from sacrifice, to mass killing. Which is oxymoronic to the essence and core values of the month of Ramadan.
Our Ramadan kitchen menu was plant-based, for the most part, with a bare-minimum use of plastic, a proper management/disposal and recycling system for our solid waste; as well as constructive para-activities such as planting trees and other various plants between the refugee camps of Majdal Anjar, in an attempt to counter the inevitable degradation of the area’s flora.
